Every year on November 14th, the world comes together to raise awareness about diabetes — a condition affecting more than 500 million people globally. Today, we’re raising awareness about the challenges of fighting this disease.

As Rwanda continues to modernize its health system, tackling the rising burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), has become a national priority. Here’s how we’re addressing the issue with the help of our partners.

Ten years ago, giving birth in Bigogwe, a rural area in Rwanda’s western province, Nyabihu District was filled with uncertainty. Now, Bigogwe Health Center welcomes an average of 215 deliveries each month. The staff has grown and so has the facility’s the reputation for quality care.

Health Builder supported Maternal and Child Health week in Rwanda June 3-7 2024.

On May 5, 2024, Health Builders fellows hosted a successful Walkathon as a part of their Global Health Corps cohort project.

On May 29, 2023, Health Builders officially launched a new health center in Mwulire, the only sector in the three districts supported by Health Builders that didn’t have a health center.

On May 30, 2023, Health Builders officially opened three new health posts in Rulindo District to make health care more accessible to rural community members.

The opening the Rugerero Health Center three months ago has been a welcome addition to this rural community.

With non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension being the leading cause of death globally, accounting for 70% of all deaths, Health Builders is following the lead of the Government of Rwanda to tackle the issue with a new approach.

As of June 2022, Rugerero Health Center is fulfilling its original purpose, to serve all the population of Rugerero Sector

Health Builders has built seven health centers from the ground up - with many of the paid workers being women from the local community. The health centers provide comprehensive health care to 250,000 people formerly without it.

The 2050 Sustainable Development Goal is to provide 1,600 health posts by 2050, compared to just under 500 today.
