“I Finally Gave Birth Safely” – Venantie Uwimana’s Story

Venantie Uwimana, a 34-year-old mother from Rulindo District, welcomed her fourth child into the world at Nkanga Second Generation Health Post in May 2025. But this birth was different, in a very good way.

“For my first three children, I had to travel more than two hours to reach Kinini Health Center,” Venantie recalls. “The transport to the hospital and back home cost me 20,000 Rwf, which was a heavy burden for my family, and that’s without even counting hospital fees or even transport for a community health worker who would accompany me.”

The long distances and costs weren’t the only challenges. Venantie vividly remembers a traumatic experience during her third pregnancy.

“I went into labor at night while on a motorbike to Kinini Health Center. I gave birth on the way, in the dark, without any medical support. It was terrifying for me and for my baby.”

That difficult night left a lasting fear for Venantie. But everything changed with the opening of the Nkanga Health Post, just 10 minutes from her home.

“This time, I went early because I had attended all my antenatal visits at the health post. I felt ready. The nurses welcomed me, and I delivered safely and with dignity.”

For Venantie, the health post is more than a building, it’s a lifeline. “It has saved me time, money, and worry. Most importantly, it has saved my life and the life of my baby.”

Venantie’s story is one of many that show the impact of bringing health services closer to the people and how it can protect mothers and babies.
