Testimonial: Marie Rose Uzamukunda’s Experience with Giko Health Post
Marie Rose Uzamukunda, a 32-year-old resident, describes how Giko Health Post has been a game-changer for her family and neighbors. "Before Giko Health Post was established, reaching the nearest health center meant traveling for two long hours or even more," she shared. "Now, medical help is just 10 to 30 minutes away. It’s a huge relief for all of us."
While she appreciates the convenience, Marie also spoke about the challenges faced by the health post. Currently, it only operates on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, which creates difficulties for those who fall sick on other days. "If someone gets sick on a Thursday or Friday, they have to wait until the next week. That wait can sometimes make the situation worse or be dangerous if the illness requires immediate attention" she explained.
Marie Rose also highlighted the heavy burden on the sole nurse, who manages everything from consultations to dispensing medication. "He does everything alone, and although he works incredibly hard, the waiting time can be very long," she noted. "If another nurse could join him, it would make a big difference."
During her pregnancy, Marie faced yet another challenge. Since Giko Health Post does not currently offer maternity services, she had to travel 10 kilometers to Tumba Health Center for check-ups and delivery. "If Giko Health [Post] had those services, I wouldn’t have had to make those long trips," she said.
Despite these hurdles, Marie expressed deep gratitude for Giko Health. "The nurse does an amazing job with the limited resources available," she added. "We just hope that the health post can grow and provide even more services. More days of operation, more staff, and more services would truly transform our community."
With the right support, Giko Health Post could become a central hub for primary healthcare, serving as a model for community-based health solutions. You can help today by making a tax-deductible donation!
