How an Ultrasound Saved My Life: Uwimana Zainabu’s Story
In Rwamagana District, obstetrical ultrasound services are no longer a privilege, but a core component of antenatal care for every pregnant woman. But this wasn’t always the case.
5 years ago before Health Builders introduced Primary Health Center ultrasound service in Rwanda, ultrasounds were not readily available to mothers in rural communities in Rwanda. Women often had to choose between walking more than two hours to the nearest health center and knowing whether they had a high risk pregnancy.
But now, in Rwamagana District, ultrasounds are not only available, but staff have been trained how to use them effectively. This transformation is the result of Health Builders’ partnership with the Rwanda Biomedical Center. Through donating ultrasound machines to health centers and training staff at rural health centers, this innovation has proven lifesaving for mothers like Zainabu Uwimana.

Zainabu Uwimana
“My name is Zainabu Uwimana, and I live in Gisheki Village, Kaduha Cell, Munyaga Sector. I want to share how the availability of ultrasound services during antenatal care (ANC) at Munyaga Health Center saved my life.
During my pregnancy, I began experiencing severe stomach cramps, swelling, and sharp abdominal pain. When I visited the health center, a urine test confirmed that I was pregnant. Because my pain was unusual, the midwife decided to perform an ultrasound scan as part of my ANC examination.
The scan revealed a serious problem that could be life-threatening if not detected early. Thanks to the availability of the ultrasound machine and the quick decision of the midwife, I was immediately referred to Rwamagana Hospital for emergency care.
At the hospital, the medical team performed urgent surgery, and it was successful. When I woke up and saw my husband beside me, I realized how fortunate I was that the problem had been detected in time. Without the ultrasound, my condition might not have been discovered before it became fatal.
I am deeply grateful for the ultrasound service at Munyaga Health Center and for the professionalism and rapid action of the health team. This machine made early detection possible and directly contributed to saving my life.
Today, I encourage all pregnant women to attend their ANC visits and undergo ultrasound screening. It can detect complications early and protect mothers’ lives. Having this service available at our health center is a blessing, especially for families who cannot afford expensive scans elsewhere.
I am also committed to supporting this lifesaving service. If the machine ever requires repair or replacement, I am ready to mobilize fellow women and neighbors to contribute so that this service remains available to all pregnant mothers in our community.
I truly appreciate the care and dedication of the Munyaga Health Center team. Their swift action and the availability of ultrasound services made all the difference for me.”
Zainabu’s experience reminds us that access to quality maternal health services is not optional. It is lifesaving.
