This month, we were honored to speak with Pascal Simpenzwe, Vice Mayor of Social Affairs in Nyabihu District about the District's partnership with the local team. "In brief, I would say that Health Builders support in Kinyarwanda is “amashyiga atatu yuzuye” meaning that the three pillars of infrastructure, mentoring and education, and technology and equipment are complementary."
He continued: “The training provided to Community Health Workers is highly impactful because they are the first health providers nearest to the community. They are being trained on hygiene and sanitation, mother and child care, and home-based care for COVID-19 prevention and now they can provide better follow-up of patients in the community. Regarding the support provided to health centers, we appreciate the comprehensive package provided. A nurse can have all the necessary knowledge and skills to provide quality healthcare services but without the appropriate infrastructure and equipment, this knowledge and the skills are useless. For example, if someone trains you on gynecological skills but you don’t have a maternity ward, you would not see the results of the training. Some partners limit their support to training but the reason we thank Health Builders is that they don’t only provide knowledge, but they also provide equipment and facilities to apply the skills."
In just four years, almost 1,000 babies were born and over 40,000 consultations were conducted since Kintobo Health Center was built. We know it takes a team to achieve sustainable results. Community supporters like Pascal Simpenzwe help us ensure Kintobo Health Center is a busy community center in the heart of Nyabihu, providing a lifelong impact on the communities who previously did not have access to quality health care.
